XML API suggestion

From the web page:
"Don't try to use NULL for the parentNode - it would cause GPF instantly :)"
So, if NULL is not valid argument, why not take reference instead of 
pointer now?
This way passing NULL would become syntax error. Probably similar 
changes can
be made in other areas, while we are at it.
